But where did it all begin?  In 1958 when fashion was on the brink of becoming more casual, Fred Segal leap-frogged the trend and opened his first store selling "custom jeans" and never looked back.   As his business grew, he again took a unique turn by offering stores to employees not as a simple franchise of his existing operation but as a vehicle for them to find their own unique voice.  This included his own family.
